Halt in unemployment benefits hits mom, 5 kids
In a Chronicle news article today, Rosharon resident Shant'e Kelley was the example given to put a human face on effects of Congress' failure to extend emergency unemployment benefits.
Kelley, 35, has five children and is out of money. She was laid off from a secretarial job in 2007 and has been looking for work ever since.
She's among the estimated 33,000 Texans and 212,000 people nationwide who did not receive unemployment benefits this week and cannot pursue additional financial assistance.
Kelley continues to apply for work every week and has been to more than 20 job interviews but has lost confidence anyone will hire her because she doesn't have a college degree. She is attending Houston Community College on student loans.
