Pearland athletes in action: Women's basketball

The following women's basketball players, all with local high school ties, will see action this week:

Ebony Ford, Northwestern State University
Position: Forward
High school: Pearland High School
This week: Saturday, March 2, at Stephen F. Austin State University
About Ford: Ford is a redshirt freshman forward for Northwestern State University. She is a 2011 graduate of Pearland High School, where she was a first team all-district player as a senior and second team honoree as a junior. In her senior season, she averaged 15 points and seven boards a game along with an average of two assists, three steals and two blocked shots. She also was recognized as an All-American Scholar and was a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. The psychology major from Pearland is the daughter of Dennis and Arlene Ford.

Kiara Freeman, Panola College
High school: Pearland High School
This week: Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Paris Junior College
About Freeman: Freeman, a 5-foot-5 freshman for Panola College, is a 2012 graduate of Pearland High School. She is a Pearland native.

Julia Bennett, University of San Diego
Position: Guard
High School: Pearland High School
This week: Saturday, March 2, at Santa Clara University
About Bennett: Bennett is a junior guard for the University of San Diego. She is a 2009 graduate of Pearland High School where she was named Defensive and Offensive Player of the year in 2008. She averaged 18 points as a senior to go along with 3.2 assists 4 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. As a senior she was named to the All-Greater Houston team and was named to the academic all-state team. She carried a 3.7 GPA into USD. Bennett is from Pearland and is the daughter of Willie and Joyce Bennett.
