Alvin ISD hosts food, toy drive
Alvin ISD elementary students helps sort and pack donations in preparation to distribute the items to families.
Alvin Independent School District recently hosted a food and toy drive, raising enough donations to provide 200 families with food and 400 toys for children.
According to a press release, "In memory and honor of former Alvin ISD teacher Shellie Garza and her passion for helping others in need, multiple campuses in Alvin ISD have continued the tradition of collecting food for the needy that she began years ago. This year, once again the district joined teams with Alvin Community College and other local organizations in an effort to have a bigger impact in the community. Campuses collected thousands of nonperishable food items and toys for children, in hopes that more families will have a good Christmas. Community members, district staff and students then joined forces to sort the items in preparation to distribute them to families in need."
The district made the announcement Thursday, Dec. 6.
"As a district this is our opportunity to do something good for the members of this community, while teaching our students the importance of being kind and helping others," said Daniel Combs, director of communications, in the release.
