Pearland High School academic decathlon team off to 2-0 start

Pearland's Kyler Plotts shows off his trophy for placing first in the overall individual competition of the academic decathlon versus Friendswood in November.

Pearland High School's academic decathlon team is off to a 2-0 start this season.

The team's season started with a scrimmage at Cinco Ranch High School in October. Pearland's victory was aided by the following students placing in the overall individual categories: Honors Division, second place — Shivam Dave; Scholastic Division, first place — Josephine Thomas, third place — Stephanie El-Quaran, fourth place — Marcella Saboe; and Varsity division, first place — Levi Nussman, second place — Kyler Plotts, third place — Kaitlyn Harbuck, fourth place — Mason Natale.

In November, Coach Robert Layne's team took top honors at the Friendswood scrimmage. Every student on the team placed in at least one of the seven academic categories. Placing in the overall individual categories were: Honors Division, second place — Dave; Scholastic Division, first place — Thomas, third place — Saboe, fourth place — Aaron Engler; and Varsity Division, first place — Plotts, second place — Nussman.

There is one last scrimmage in December before the team competes at the regional competition in January.
