Women’s Club plans luncheon, shopping event

The Southeast Christian Women’s Club will hold a Christmas luncheon and shopping event from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at Golfcrest Country Club, 2509 Country Club Drive, Pearland. Deb Cerkovink will speak at the luncheon on the topic How the Three Cs of Curiosity, Crisis and Control Can Affect and Change Our Lives.

Vendors will sell home decor, fashion accessories, clothing, jewelry, health and beauty and business and professional services. Lunch costs $16.

Local resident wins solar-power Green Mountain

Pearland resident wins solar-generated electricity from Green Mountain Energy Luz Rico Vasquez won the Green Mountain Energy Company’s Bring Sunshine Home Sweepstakes and received a check for $5,000 to cover solar-generated energy costs for her Houston home for the next three years.

The contest was open to residents in Texas and New York. Vasquez was selected from more than 7,000 entries.

New Life Plaza hosting Life and Soul health fair

New Life Plaza recently hosted a Life and Soul health fair. Joy of Sharing, an initiative of Global Organization for Divinity (G.O.D.), conducted the event, which offered free health screenings to more than 100 participants. Attendees came from Houston, Manvel, Pearland, Alvin, Brazosport, Sugar Land and

The Woodlands. Organized in the spirit of service to the community, the fair’s goal was to bring together like-minded health service organizations. There was a blood donation drive and free state-sponsored flu shots for children without insurance. 

Student volunteers from Milby High School, DeBakey High School, Manvel High School and University of Houston provided assistance in running the event.

ACC holds workshop for peace officers

Alvin Community College’s Criminal Justice Department recently hosted the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) special workshop. More than 130 Texas peace officers attended the event, which included a law enforcement workshop to familiarize law enforcement administrators and trainers with changes to TCLEOSE rules.

Supervisory agent for field services Richart Gutierrez and field agent Doug Staudt conducted the workshop. The mission of TCLEOSE is to establish and enforce standards that ensure the people of Texas are served by highly trained and ethical law enforcement, corrections and telecommunications personnel.

Keep Pearland Beautiful to hold Arbor Day event

Keep Pearland Beautiful will hold Arbor Day Give Away 2013 from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 12­­­­. To mark the event, the organization will give away free tree seedlings to residents including American elms, pond cypress, wild pears, Chickasaw plum trees and blackgum tupelos.

The giveaway will take place at two locations, the Pearland Community Center, located at 3519 Liberty Drive and the Westside Events Center at 2150 Country Place.
