Mercer leads La Marque football over Galveston Ball
The La Marque High School football team scored twice in the opening quarter and went on to earn a 35-12 season-opening win over Galveston Ball Aug. 30 at Etheredge Stadium.
The Cougars were in front 21-0 at halftime and finished the game with 443 yards. They limited Ball to 98 yards of offense. Demun Mercer was 11-of-12 passing for 220 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for two scores as he rolled up 122 yards on the ground. Daniel Lee caught two passes for 81 yards and caught two scoring strikes. Jerome Ward caught the other TD pass.
Ario Holmen rushed for 45 yards and scored the only offensive TD for the Tornadoes. Derrick Decker scored the other TD on 20-yard fumble recovery.
La Marque will play at Texas City Friday, Sept. 7 and will host Coldspring-Oakhurst Friday, Sept. 14. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Cougars play at Rosenberg Lamar Consolidated Saturday, Sept. 22 in a 2 p.m. game.
Ball will play at home against KIPP Sunnyside Friday, Sept. 14 and will host MacArthur Friday, Sept. 21. The Tornadoes travel to Baytown Lee Friday, Sept. 28. All three games will begin at 7 p.m.
