Roller Derby classes begin in September
Registration is open for Roller Derby Boot Camp classes set to begin Monday, Sept. 10 at Pearwood Skate Center.
The Roller Derby beginner class will be from 8-9 p.m. for three weeks on Mondays. Registrants need to be able to skate at a steady speed, stop and skate around moving and stationary objects. All gear will be provided for the course.
Intermediate level classes will be from 7-9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays for a four-week session. Participants in the intermediate class need to provide their own gear. Completion of the beginner's course or Roller Derby experience is necessary.
After completing the intermediate class, skaters are eligible to participate in the Advanced Competitive Skater program. Skaters will be drafted to Roller Derby teams for competition. Scrimmages are held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays and class is held from 7-9 p.m. Thursdays. Participants must attend eight practices per month to compete. Competitive skaters need their own gear and must be available for game times and promotional events to skate or work. Skaters will tear down and set up the track on game days.
South Side Roller Derby tryouts take place once a month. The rest of the 2012 season includes Pasadena Convention Center events Saturday, Oct. 13, Saturday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Dec. 29.
The fall season for classes begins Monday, Sept. 10 and all classes cost $65 to $75 for participation. Participants must be 18 or older.
The Pearwood Skate Center is at 1230 Broadway, Pearland.
