SLPD takes registration applications for Citizens Police Academy
The Sugar Land Police Department is taking registration applications for the next Citizens Police Academy which is set to begin Thursday, Sept. 13.
This 10-week course will meet weekly from 7-10 p.m. Thursdays at police headquarters and is being offered at no cost to participants.
Class members will learn about the challenges faced by police officers, laws affecting citizens, the judicial system, emergency management and will interact with officers in a nontraditional law enforcement setting, according to a department press release.
The academy program has been recently expanded and will consist of classroom and hands-on instruction designed to provide interested Sugar Land citizens with a working knowledge of the police department, its personnel and emergency management operations.
A wide-ranging list of topics will be covered over the 10 weeks, including weapons and use of force, firearm simulations, narcotics investigation, gang activity, traffic laws and driving while intoxicated enforcement, building searches, traffic stops, telecommunications and crime scene investigation. Students will learn about how the Texas prison system works and will tour the Jester Prison Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
