Sablatura Middle School student council receives national attention
The student council at Leon Sablatura Middle School in the Pearland ISD has received national recognition for its leadership and community service-building activities.
SMS was one of 64 Texas schools honored with the National Association of Elementary School Principals 2012 Honor Council Excellence Award.
To promote an inclusive campus environment and encourage community involvement, the student council hosted a range of events, including the following:
Mix It Up Lunch: Children sat next to people they didn't usually sit with and used conversation prompts to learn more about one another. National No Name-Calling Week: Instead of "put downs," students made a wall of "put ups" - messages of encouragement. Scholastic Great Bedtime Story Drive: Students collected new pajamas for underprivileged children. School Store and Pop Tab Collections: Students operated a school supply store to raise money for outreach projects and collected soda tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Fire Victim Collections: Students collected toiletries and clothes for victims of Waller County wildfires. Winter Wonderland Social: Students hosted a social event to build school spirit and encourage friendships.
Teachers Lauren Hobbs and Carolyn Gleitz are the council sponsors.
Leon Sablatura Middle School is at 2201 N. Galveston Ave., Pearland.
