San Jacinto College unveils new health sciences expansion

San Jacinto College has unveiled its new health sciences expansion.

The expansion is a 35,000-square-foot building located on the college's Central Campus. The expansion cost $11 million and contains cutting-edge health care technology that simulates real patient interactions. The building includes an eye care suite, sonography suite, dental assistant lab and simulation center.

Veronica Jammer, dean of the college's health sciences division, said in a press release: "This new facility will provide an environment that simulates actual clinical and patient care opportunities in a chosen discipline. Additionally, this building will provide an avenue for new health science programs to be brought to the forefront so that San Jacinto College can remain competitive and retain its status as a leader of health science education in this region."

SJC works closely with medical professionals in the Houston area to help match highly trained students with health care job opportunities. The eye care technology program boasts a 100 percent job placement rate and is the only accredited program for ophthalmic technicians in Texas. Students in the medical imaging/radiology program are often hired before graduation. The dental assistant program is scheduled to begin offering courses in fall 2012.

San Jacinto College's Central Campus is located at 8060 Spencer Highway.
