Corridor Rotary Club receives $500 grant
The 288 Corridor Rotary Club received a $500 HEROES grant for its "H5H — High Five for Health" program.
The program trains and adopts 15 to 20 high school students as health promoters to educate fellow students and younger generations on childhood obesity and the importance of healthy eating and regular physical activity.
The student educators are provided a health educator to guide them in presenting current nutritional guidelines to middle school students at a pilot program in a Pearland school. The participants will then present the same information to the children in the community through local health fairs, church events and citywide activities.
The grants of as much as $1,000 each were awarded to programs demonstrating an understanding of the health risks associated with childhood obesity, which also propose creative solutions to fight obesity in neighborhoods and communities that an be effectively implemented, scaled and measured.
UnitedHealthcare awarded $6,500 in HEROES grants to eight programs in the Houston area for youth-led projects that address childhood obesity. Additionally, more than $187,000 in HEROES grants were awarded to 282 schools and community-based organizations nationwide.
