Brazoria County man honored for historical work
published Sep. 17, 2012
On Sept. 11, the Commissioners Court of Brazoria County presented James Glover with a proclamation that applauded his efforts to promote and preserve the histories of the three Texas navies.
Glover was also honored by being commissioned an admiral in the Texas Navy by Gov. Rick Perry earlier this year.
During the Texas Revolution, government officials in Washington-on-the-Brazos established an official navy and in January 1836 purchased four schooners named Invincible, Brutus, Independence and Liberty, according to The Texas Navy Association.
According to Brazoria County, there are three Texas navies, two of which were naval fighting forces and a third honorary one in which officers are commissioned by the governor of Texas as admirals, commanders and lieutenants.
The third navy, in which Glover was named an admiral, passed along knowledge about the Texas Navy, a measure which played a role in the Revolution of Texans from Mexico and that eventually resulted in the Republic of Texas being formed as a sovereign nation. The Third Navy is now devoted to preserving the history of the three Texas navies.
