The city of Pearland will stage meetings next week on a proposal to target tracts adjacent to two residential areas for future use as neighborhood commercial centers. The idea is to designate neighborhood commercial "nodes" in the Pearland Future Land Use Plan for the intersection at McLean and Magnolia roads and for the one at Hatfield Road and W. Orange. The city also is staging at meeting at 6:30 p.m. today at Mary Marek Elementary School on overall recommendations for changes in the land-use plan.

Things are going to change at the intersection of Pearland Parkway and Barry Rose Road. Pearland City Council last night awarded a $164,359 bid to Statewide Traffic Signal Co. to install a full-time traffic light there.

Consider heading out to 14th annual Pearland Winterfest 2010, which will take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9 at Independence Park at 3919 Liberty Dr. in Pearland. The event begins at 9 a.m. for special-needs kids.

Pearland police have no leads in last month’s theft of a bronze statue from Centennial Park. The theft has taken some of the steam out of plans to install public art in parks throughout the city.
