Pearland City Council passed a resolution Monday urging area community colleges to approve a cooperative agreement to provide job training in the city.

The resolution, which was unanimously OK'd by Council, seeks a cooperative agreemeent between Alvin Community College, Houston Community College and San Jacinto Community College.

When asked to do art with a rodeo theme, Pearland youths at Alvin school district campuses came up with works in which the mood ranges from meditative to boisterious and the subjects range from pigs to cowpokes to desperados.

An in-house investigation by the Alvin ISD Police Department has determined that an e-mail warning about gang activity is a hoax, Police Chief Eugene Lewis said. The e-mail warned of a gang initiation involving the placement of a bloody child seat along a roadside to lure female motorists out of their vehicles.

The city of Alvin expects to finalize the purchase of 33 acres in mid-February that would be the future site of a $7 million conference center. The Alvin school district is among groups being consulted about what events can be held at the proposed center.

Alvin ISD officials announced that schools will be let out today at the regular dismissal times. District spokeswoman Shirley Brothers said school officials have been informed by state highway officials and local law enforcement personnel that roadways "will accommodate safe travel at dismissal time."
