The 71-year-old "Bridge to Nowhere" across the Brazos River at Brazoria got a new lease on life as well as dedication to a much different purpose than when it was originally built.

Brazoria County Commissioners voted unanimously to assume ownership of the bridge and to preserve it in accordance with the Texas Historic Bridge Program.

Reducing costs, improving communications and maintaining facilities are some major concerns of the three candidates vying for the Position 4 seat on Brazoria County Drainage District No. 4.

The Republican candidates are Tommy Coler, 59, of Pearland, a crane rental operator; Rick King, 43, of Manvel, a project manager for an information technology firm; and Harrison Rogers, 63, of Brookside Village, a retired engineer.

No Democratic candidates have filed in the race.

Managing growth, keeping pace with mobility needs and providing adequate city services are among the top priorities for candidates in the May 8 Pearland City Council election. Three candidates are running for the Position 5 Council seat held by Kevin Cole, who cannot seek a fourth consecutive term under city law. The candidates are Tammy Dexter, a biological researcher; Ed Thompson, an insurance agent; and George Skip Shelton, a refinery worker.

Pearland High School student Hannah Gorse received a congressional congratulations March 8 from U.S. Rep. Pete Olson.

The congressman stopped by PHS to commend Gorse on her selection into NASA’s High School Aerospace Scholars, an interactive online learning experience and residential program at Johnson Space Center.

Sablatura Middle School students will get a glimpse into the life of an Afghan girl struggling to survive in a world without democracy, thanks to a recently-awarded Donors Choose grant.

Sablatura teacher Marcie Stenvall’s social studies class received 40 copies of Deborah Ellis’ novel “The Breadwinner” through a $300 grant from Donors Choose, an organization that allows private individuals to donate to projects of their choice.

Pearland businesses will turn into art galleries March 6-28 as they display student artwork in lobbies and windows for the first-ever citywide Youth Art Month “art walk.”

During normal business hours, businesses will host temporary art displays featuring paintings, sketches and sculptures by Pearland ISD students.

Responding to a 911 call, Pearland police early Tuesday foiled the attempted robbery of the Dollar General store in the 2000 block of North Main. Two suspects were taken into custody; no other details were available.

Three candidates have filed for the Position 5 City Council seat now held by Kevin Cole, who cannot seek a third consecutive term under city law. Cole said he plans to run for mayor next year.

Pearland voters will also decide City Council Position 1. Councilman Woody Owens has filed for re-election to that seat and is unopposed.

Nine candidates, including three incumbents, are vying for three at-large positions on the Pearland Independent School District Board of Trustees. In the Position 5 race, incumbent Lillian Smith is running against trustee Suzy Roberts, who is not seeking re-election to her Position 6 seat, and Rebecca Decker.
