A few months ago I expressed concern that perhaps the former Athletic Director received special treatment when he carried a gun on to PISD school property. I was wrong. Apparently, just about anyone can carry a weapon on to school property with no ramifications whatsoever. (See Pearland ISD probes gun incident.)
I’ve been reading, with interest, the comments made by others regarding the latest gun incident. It troubles me that there is any discussion at all regarding sanction against Board Member Suzy Roberts for making the information public. I am the public and when it comes to guns on the school property I want to know about it. As a parent, it is my RIGHT to know about it. I am quite sure there are many other things I would prefer to know about that are going on in our schools. However, as a former employee I can tell you there is a culture of secrecy and intimidation within the district. Board member Roberts let out a secret and she will feel intimidation.
When members of our Board of Trustees appear to be more concerned about word of the incident getting out than they are that the incident happened, we have a problem. Trust is the first 5 letters in the word Trustee - as in Board of Trustees. Right now I’m not sure many of them deserve the trust that we have placed in them. Their complacency regarding this gun incident is disturbing, but even more disturbing is the secrecy surrounding it.

You've Got It Wrong
The board of trustees knows what is good for our children and what exactly constitutes a safe environment for them. To suggest that the people who know what is best for a child are the parents is just some right wing extremist crazy talk.
Now on to being serious: This whole situation is inexcusable and it simply adds insult to injury to hear that they wanted to keep this information from parents. How on earth are we going to raise our children with any measure of accountability when it is clear that this is a foreign concept to their school's leadership?
What About the Past
When Suzy Roberts brought up the subject of prayer before meetings along with 4 other items, one trustee or the Superintendent leaked that email to the public. No one on the board objected or investigated the leak
Someone, possibly a trustee or school employee used the PTA email list to send out inflammatory emails. Again, no one investigated the leak.
When the president of the board resigned and asked the board to "remain intolerant" no one on the board did anything to distance themselves from his bigoted request.
This board is incredibly dysfunctional. Suzy is the only willing to get this information out to members of the community. If anyone needs to be sanctioned, it's Bonny Cain and the four members who voted to extend her contract/

Enough said! (Good Job) Let's hope this carries to the meeting next Tuesday.
Embarassing Board
This school board is such a disgrace. If the board chooses to continue with sanctioning Mrs. Roberts they are even bigger fools than I thought previously. Mrs. Roberts, THANK YOU for being intelligent enough and understanding the difference between right and wrong when it comes to real life situations that appear to be foreign to the administration of the district as they apply to 2010. This style may have served well for a small community district 20 years ago but times and Pearland have changed dramatically. It's time for the leaders to recognize and respond to this accordingly.
Time to Vote
All, I encourage everyone to vote at our next school board elections. It's not not only disturbing but deceitful the shenanigans, the cover-ups, the secrecy, and the misappropriations of funds (how much did that big fancy district building cost us and how much deficit are we in, again?)...
VOTE!
