Steve Wynn and son Jason with Buster circa 1980.: Photo courtesy Steve WynnOne sure way to get a chuckle out of an old time Pearlander is to ask him if he remembers the beer guzzling buffalo that was outside a beer joint between Pearland and Alvin. The name of the beer joint was “Country Place” owned by a gentleman named J. B. Choate. Mr. Choate not only had his beer drinking buffalo staked outside the beer joint; but he also had another oddity - - a five legged Brahman bull which had the 5th leg growing out of the hump on his back. A couple of years ago, the Pearland Historical Newsletter ran a short story asking if any of the members remembered the beer drinking buffalo and the Brahman bull. Many did remember and many had stories of seeing the buffalo downing a bottle of beer. One person recalled Mr. Choate also had javelinas and monkeys to attract customers into the “Country Place.” Larry Phillips recalled that a “customer would buy a beer for the buffalo and he would take it in his teeth and chug-a-lug it down.” Stories even went around about the old bison drinking more than twenty beers one time and getting very drunk. The bull and buffalo were quite an attraction as Mr. Choate would stake them out front near the highway. Steve Wynn, retired Pearland school teacher, remembered taking his son Jason down to see the buffalo back around 1980 or 1981 and even had a picture of himself and Jason giving a beer to the buffalo, which Steve says was named Buster. As you can see from the picture, Buster does seem to be enjoying his brew. Don’t you imagine old Buster sold many a bottle of beer to the tourists stopping to have a brew with Buster. Do you think Mr. Choate may have told them Buster didn’t like the cheap beers? When you hear an old timer talking about all the beer joints around Pearland, ask him if he remembers the one with the beer drinking buffalo. Bet he will.

I can't believe that I am seeing this! That bison really enjoys
I can't believe that I am seeing this! That bison really enjoys his beer. I wonder how many beers did it drink to reach that level of "likeness". I'd say that Buster deserves a free membership in one of the local beer of the month clubs. He obviously earned it!

Actually, the place was called "The Country Store - Buy, Sell & Trade anything under the sun". Leeroy Miller took over the store in 1968. JB Choate was Leeroy's father-in-law and passed prior to 1980.
