Beautiful volunteers Stuart Coffman and Dorman Davidson are among those helping organize a tree-recycling drive that will run Dec. 26-Jan. 23 for the annual Dunes Day project to rebuild the county beaches’ sand dunes.

Pearland city residents of single-family homes can recycle their Christmas trees by placing them curbside on their second garbage day of the week, according to a news release from Keep Pearland Beautiful.

All decorations, tinsel and stands must be removed. These trees will be taken to a commercial composting facility and be recycled into mulch.

Call Keep Pearland Beautiful at 281-652-1659 for more information.

Another option for getting rid of that tree is to take it to the Stella Roberts Recycling Center, 5800 Magnolia, between Dec 28 and Jan. 21. The trees will be accepted at the center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Thursday, Jan. 21, the trees will be taken to Brazoria County beaches for use in the Dunes Day Project to rebuild sand dunes and restore the beaches.

To volunteer for the project, call 281-756.1564, ext. 116.

Area residents also may drop off their Christmas trees at AMI-Pearland’s office building,
12234 Shadow Creek Parkway, Building 3, or at any county precinct barn, including those in Alvin and Manvel.

“The dunes are coming back due in large part to last year’s Dunes Day efforts, but they still need help,” Brazoria County Parks Department Director Richard Hurd asid in a press release. “Should Brazoria County land another big storm in 2010, the dunes will need to be in the best condition possible to help protect Brazoria County and its beaches.”

Dunes Day volunteers will meet at Quintana and near Surfside at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 to position and stake the discarded trees in place
to catch windblown sand and rebuild the dune line. Volunteers must bring
a hammer and gloves. The county will provide stakes and twine.
