Nine candidates, including three incumbents, are vying for three at-large positions on the Pearland Independent School District Board of Trustees. In the Position 5 race, incumbent Lillian Smith is running against trustee Suzy Roberts, who is not seeking re-election to her Position 6 seat, and Rebecca Decker.

UPDATED: Negotiators attempted to make contact with anyone inside the residence but were unsuccessful. After approximately 2-1/2 hours officers decided to introduce gas canisters into the residence. Just prior to their making entry, the second suspect revealed himself and was taken into custody without incident. This second suspect suffered minor facial irritation from the gas but was otherwise uninjured. No other information is available for release at this time.

After apprehending one suspected burglar, police closed part of Garden Road between Brookside Village and Butler Road as they searched for the second suspect. The names of the suspects not been released and no other information was available.

Responding to a 911 call, Pearland police early Tuesday foiled the attempted robbery of the Dollar General store in the 2000 block of North Main. Two suspects were taken into custody; no other details were available.

Three candidates have filed for the Position 5 City Council seat now held by Kevin Cole, who cannot seek a third consecutive term under city law. Cole said he plans to run for mayor next year.

Pearland voters will also decide City Council Position 1. Councilman Woody Owens has filed for re-election to that seat and is unopposed.

In a unanimous vote Monday, Pearland City Council got the ball rolling toward the planned annexation of six areas that take up about four square miles of the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction. Some residents of Area 6 area near Pearland Regional Airport on Airfield Lane, questioned the city’s motive in taking over that area.

Pearland voters will also decide City Council Position 1. Councilman Woody Owens has filed for re-election to that seat and as of 4 p.m. today, was unopposed.

The filing deadline is 5 p.m. today.
